In Your Next Beach Read, we want to introduce you to a new author every day in June in the hopes that you’ll find the next book you want to take with you to the beach, the pool, or the comforts of air conditioning.
Today’s author is Tomas Moniz, author of All Friends Are Necessary.
What’s your name (or pen name) and where are you from?
Tomas Moniz from Oakland, CA
How long have you been writing? How did you start?
As a super young parent, I couldn’t go party so I sat home and wrote bad poetry and drank cheap wine.
Who are some of your influences?
Gloria Anzaldua, Denis Johnson, Toni Morrison.
What is your book about?
The novella takes place in San Francisco and deals with friendship, sobriety, antifascism and spin classes!
Where did you get the idea?
It’s the summer 2017 in San Francisco and Nazis are holding rallies in the Bay Area. WTF? I wanted to feel like my art was trying to do something about the situation…
How long did it take you to finish it?
Three months for the first draft, a year to revise.
Is this your first book, or have you written more than one?
I’ve written a ton of zines and a couple anthologies on parenting and a kids book!
We all like to write about people we know, even if we never name them. Who are some people who inspired characters or situations?
All my homies getting older, surviving, and still loving punk shows!
What’s your favorite scene in the book?
Skinny dipping in Ocean Beach.
What’s the best piece of writing advice you ever got?
Write what you enjoy and because you enjoy. Plot and craft come later.
What’s the worst?
Don’t share until it’s perfect.
Where can we buy your book?
He’s the recipient of the SF Literary Arts Foundation’s 2016 Award and was awarded the 2018 SPACE Ryder Farm residency in NY. He has stuff on the internet but loves penpals: PO Box 3555, Berkeley CA 94703. He promises to write back.
