#YourNextBeachRead is continuing into July as a way to introduce you to a new author and their works in the hopes that you’ll find the next book you want to take with you to the beach, the pool, or the comforts of air conditioning.
Today’s featured author is Jacquelyn Lynn, author of Finding Joy In The Morning..
What’s your name and where are you from?
Jacquelyn Lynn, Orlando, FL.
How long have you been writing? How did you start?
I escaped the corporate world and began writing professionally more than 30 years ago. Being a writer had been my dream since I was a child. When I quit my corporate job, I figured the worst that could happen was that I would fail and go back to work for another company and the best was that I would make my dream come true. I’m living my dream.
Who are some of your influences?
People who have overcome challenges and never lost their faith. I’ve been fortunate to know many of them.
What is your book about?
Finding Joy in the Morning is a guide for getting through tough times and finding peace and joy in knowing that God is always with you and always in control. This is not a self-help book, it’s an “I can’t do it alone” book. It’s not a sermon (that would be boring), just practical advice and (I hope) inspiration. It includes a list of more than 40 things you can do every day to bring joy to your life and the lives of others.
Where did you get the idea?
I was working with a client who wanted me to ghostwrite his autobiography. He had faced and overcome some tremendous challenges. Before we could finish his book, some new obstacles appeared and he abandoned the project. I began with what I had learned in the process of trying to help him organize and articulate his message and continued writing.
How long did it take you to finish it?
About six months for the first edition, and another six or eight months for the second edition. After I published the second edition, I spent several more months creating three companion books: a journal (Finding Joy Journal), a study guide (Intentional Joy) and, with my husband doing the illustrations, a coloring book (Finding Joy in the Morning Adult Coloring Book).
Is this your first book, or have you written more than one?
I have written or ghostwritten about 35 nonfiction books and one novel.
We all like to write about people we know, even if we never name them. Who are some people who inspired characters or situations?
This book has a number of stories about people I know and most of them are named.
What’s your favorite scene in the book?
This is nonfiction, so it doesn’t have scenes the way novels do. I learned the most from the chapter on forgiveness.
What’s the best piece of writing advice you ever got?
What’s the worst?
I’ve forgotten the bad advice—what’s the point in remembering negatives?
Where can we buy your book?
Finding Joy in the Morning is available in print, audio, and Kindle on Amazon, and in ebook format on all major online bookseller sites.
Jacquelyn Lynn finds joy in her faith, family, and friends, and in the knowledge that she is living God’s purpose for her life. In addition to Finding Joy in the Morning, she is the author (or ghostwriter) of more than 35 non-fiction books including Words to Work By, and the co-creator of several coloring books for adults, including Christian Meditations and Faith Words. She is also the author of a novel, Choices, the first book in the Joyful Cup Story series.
